rip microsoft paint jim ll paint it 1 Goodnight Sweet Prince

When word spread that Microsoft was planning to ‘deprecate’ MS Paint in its next Windows 10 Update, the Internet rallied in a collective uproar against the plan.

An outpouring of sadness, nostalgia and protest ensued at the loss of the 32-year-old program and Microsoft has since backtracked, saying it will still remove Paint from the next Windows 10 update but make the program available on the Windows Store.

First released with the very first version of Windows 1.0 in 1985, Paint in its various guises would be one of the first graphics editors used by many and became a core part of Windows. Starting life as a 1-bit monochrome licensed version of ZSoft’s PC Paintbrush, it wasn’t until Windows 98 that Paint could save in JPEG. [source]

Artist Jim’ll Paint It, who has become famous for his free MS Paint drawings of random requests by fans, created the tribute above in memory of the beloved program.

How many other Windows programs and Easter eggs can you find in the drawings above? So far I spot:

– Clippy
– Encarta
– MSN Messenger
– Minesweeper
– Zune
– Windows ME
– Solitaire
– MindMaze
– Bill ‘Gates’ in 4 colours
– Rodent’s Revene
– SkiFree
– Bonzi Buddy
– 3D Pinball: Space Cader
– Blue Screen of Death
– JezzBall
– Windows Explorer search dog

Illustrator and designer Jonathan Stephen Harris has gained a huge following on YouTube for his amazing drawing videos. The talented artist is best known for his 3D illustrations, hand paintings and optical illusion drawings.

One interesting exercise Harris does to practice sketching, is spelling out a word and then incorporating the letters of the word into a cartoon representation of the word itself.

In the village of Inakadate, Japan, elaborate expanses of “rice paddy art” grace the surrounding landscape. Looking for a way to boost tourism and contribute to the village’s rich culture, town officials turned to what they knew best — growing rice.

Using dozens of varieties of rice as their color palette, locals gather to plant each new masterpiece, taking inspiration from local geography and Japanese folklore. With each image taking up to three months to complete, it truly takes a village.

When Eric Massicotte and his wife came home, they found their son had decided to ‘creatively’ express himself on one of the walls in their family home.

“Your kids are going to do things they shouldn’t. It helps if you married someone with a sense of humour.”

For the last few years, New Zealand artist Benjamin Lloyd has been dropping by the Starship Children’s Hospital in Auckland to give kids temporary tattoos to try to lift their spirits and make hospital life more fun.

Lloyd uses an airbrush gun and non-toxic ink to apply the temporary tats. He and his team have done hundreds over the years and the ink can be washed off in the shower. To see more artwork by Lloyd check out his Facebook page.
